A medium sized family business with a turnover in excess of GBP 100 m had been very successful in the part but now was beginning to show signs of needing a complete overhaul if it was to stay competitive in the future.

The company had been formed by the current Managing Director's father who had built up the business from scratch. The father retired at the age of 75 & had handed over the reigns to the current MD's elder brother. During this period it was apparent to everyone in the business that all the major decisions were being made by the founder and not the elder brother.

Two years after the founder died, the elder brother retired & handed over control to the current MD.

This MD hired a consultant to provide recommendations for the overhaul of the company business. The recommendations made by the consultant were readily accepted with great enthusiasm.

However, even though this MD recognized the need to make changes, there was something holding him back from committing to the implementation - not even to the most obvious, easy to implement change with clearly defined, tangible financial benefits that would save the company GBP 25m over the next 5 years with a one off cost of something in the region of GBP 7m.

A simple process resulted in the client asking the consultant to prepare a presentation to the company's Board outlining the strategy for implementing change.

XYZ company faced a situation of growing enmity between  the Marketing & Manufacturing Directors during the selection of an appropriate change mechanism for the company. Difficulties in the relationship between these 2 directors had been in existence long before major change was proposed.

Both directors had variously accused each other of either creating the problem or contributing to it, although hard facts to support their respective claims were rather thin on the ground.

The CEO had recognized that there was a major difference of opinion between these two Directors who were reluctant to cooperate fully. They were also pushing very hard for their own preferred solutions. The CEO was worried that choosing of one Director's solution would cause the other Director to resign. The CEO was convinced that no progress was going to be made by the group as a whole if a solution was not chosen & implemented.

Several attempts had been made to resolve the problems, but neither director was prepared to discuss issues openly.

The CEO felt that if push came to shove, he might have had no alternative but to seek the resignation of one or the other.

One of the reasons why such issues arise is because individuals believe that if they do not succeed in getting their own way, their credibility somehow may be damaged.

This situation was resolved by using a simple process resulting in identifying the real cause of the problem between the two warring directors after which both the directors sought an urgent meeting with the CEO. Subsequently, these two directors setup a joint a joint task force to solve the problems that had been identified.

A prospective client had agreed in principle to commission XYZ company to design, build & intall a software product. A fully developed proposal had been made supported by a huge amount of technical detail which had been agreed by both sides. The total cost to the client was $ 4.25 m and the client & his superiors had agreed that they were happy with this figure.

However, when it came to signing the document, the client would not sign the purchase contract & appeared to be hesitating over minor details.

Have you ever faced this? Have you ever felt that despite incorporating every tiny detail into your proposal, despite providing all the necessary guarantees, despite satisfying all of your client's queries including those from his/her superiors to complete satisfaction, your client is hesitating to sign on the dotted line?

The reason could be an imprint experience. Your client could have had an experience in his/her life that has left a deep impression and lies at the root cause of this hesitation.

Grief, to me, is a strange emotion. I did not experience it when my relatives, died. Not even when my parents died. I would never have been able to claim to even understand this emotion until last week.
